2005年的一年时间里，全球范围里大约有一千七百五十万(17,500,000)人死于心血管疾病。这一千七百五十万人代表着当年30%的全球死亡人数。在一千七百五十万人当中，男女的发病率是基本持平的。其中七百六十万人死于心脏病，五百七十万死于中风。
